![]() They were married in September of 1967, and made their home in Council Bluffs where they raised three children. While attending Corning High School, she met the love of her life, Larry Dean Harrison. Mary was raised on a farm south of Corning, Iowa. She was the oldest of nine children born to James and Marie Sullivan. Hopefully the Daily Independent in Ashland, Kentucky, will continue to grow, bringing more people the news of the area.Mary Colleen Harrison, age 80, passed to her heavenly home on June 5, 2023, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It would eventually peak in 1980, with a total circulation amount of over 25,000. To give you an idea of how the Daily Independent has grown over its colored history, in 1920, the circulation was roughly 3,500, but would increase to over 17,000 by 1955. They would eventually sell it to CNH twenty-three years later in 2002. The paper would go on to be privately owned until it was bought by the Ottaway Community Newspapers, back in 1979. Forgey, who was a native to the state of Ohio and bought an interest in the Daily Independent back in 1910, is credited with spearheading the newspaper’s growth until his unfortunate death in 1952. However, in 2015, during a redesign of their publications, they would end up bringing back ‘The Sunday independent’ and ‘The Daily Independent’ namesake. The website that the newspaper uses however, still retains the old version of its name in the URL. In May of 2003, after many years of publishing on weekdays in the afternoons (and weekends in the mornings), The Independent would switch over to only publishing in the mornings, as well as drop the ‘Sunday’ and ‘Daily’ from its name. ![]() In fact, just five years later, the headquarters on 17 th Street would end up doubling in size. Several years later in 1920, the Ashland Daily Independent would found another publication, the Sunday Independent, which would also see huge success. Two years later, the Ashland Daily Independent would move its offices to a new location a few blocks over, relocating to 17 th Street right after purchasing a competitor paper, the Ashland Daily News, which it would eventually discontinue later that same year. ![]() The publication would see itself be called the Ashland Daily Independent, absorbing another local newspaper, the Ashland Commercial during its move.Īfter the move to Ashland had been completed, the very first publication would then go on to be released on December 17 of the same year. With the move, would also come a new name. The paper would do well, but eventually be moved to Ashland in the year 1900, being situated on Greenup Avenue and 12 th Street. Originally launched on December 17, 1896, the first name of the publication was the Tri-State Independent. currently owns the Ashland Daily Independent. It is a seven-day per week print publication that comes out in the mornings and coves all of Ashland, Kentucky, as well as the surrounding Boyd County, which is also located in Kentucky. The Daily Independent, which is also commonly referred to as The Sunday Independent, was actually called The Independent between 20. Being located in northeaster Kentucky right on the banks of the Ohio River, the Ashland Daily Independent has dedicated itself to provide the communities it serves with all of the trusted and relevant news information that is happening in the area.
